Chapter Twelve

“We should head back to the city,” Jackie said softly. “Micah says the pride members are really glad to be free of Goyo, but they’re pretty freaked out about everything that has happened tonight.”

Braxton grunted, not in the least bit surprised.

He stood next to Jackie and Ramsey with his arms folded cross his chest. They were still in the forest, watching Celine and Roto fuss over her brother and sister’s unconscious forms. The two young shifters hadn’t woken yet. The boy would probably need several more hours to recover from the intense healing he’d gone through.

At least they would both live.

Ramsey had lit several balls of purple flames that hovered in the air, illuminating the area. It was still dark in the forest, but dawn had begun to break overhead, the sky lightening to a hazy gray. They’d settled the matter much faster than anticipated, though it had still taken longer than Braxton liked.

It was normal for the pride members to be confused and scared after everything that had transpired. They would need time to decompress and acclimate to all of the changes. There was also a shit-ton of cleanup and reorganizing that had to happen, but Braxton had no intention of sticking around to participate in any of that.

He was too damn tired.

As a demigod, Braxton didn’t need as much sleep as other supernaturals. He could go a week or so on just a few hours, but he was exhausted from using so much magic. Not just physically fatigued, but mentally weary. Normal magic use didn’t affect him much, but every time he tapped into the powers he usually kept hidden, it drained his energy faster.

It was almost as if his light magic source was punishing him for ignoring it.

He hadn’t just used those powers to teleport to the Shifter Realm. He had also used them during the thunderclap. It had been the only way to make sure he didn’t kill everyone. Healing Celine’s siblings had required an extra punch of power as well. Although healing was something he could do with either of his magic sources, the young shifter had been close to death.

It was simpler to kill with his dark magic, and easier to heal with his light magic.

“I’m heading back to the academy,” Braxton told them.

Before anyone could utter a protest, he teleported himself back to the Fae Realm. It was a dick move, but he’d left his friends behind without a second thought. It wasn’t as if he’d left them stranded. It would take a little longer, but Micah, Jackie, and Ramsey were all capable of creating a portal to bring them back to the Fae Realm.

The moment he’d teleported back into Devon’s suite, that uncomfortable feeling he’d been experiencing since he’d left had finally begun to ease. It had felt like it had been years since he’d last seen her instead of mere hours. He’d never thought of himself as the needy, clingy type, but he freely admitted that he’d desperately missed his mate.
